Unsatisfied with options available for purchase, an expectant parent requested a custom crib for their soon to be newborn. The discerning client requested a crib that could be passed along to friends and family rather than disposed of when outgrown. The client’s interest in wood joinery and mid-century furniture influenced our concept. Solid walnut panels on bent stainless-steel legs bookend a height-adjustable mattress platform. While, on the crib’s long side, walnut cross-rails frame stainless-steel spindles. An adjustable collar supports a maple bobble on each spindle, allowing the bobbles to be positioned at varying heights. Sliding a bobble down a spindle to the collar produces a tone that encourages exploration.
